Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy is an examination of the inside of the gullet, stomach & duodenum. It is performed by using a thin, flexible fiber-optic instrument that is passed through the mouth & allows the doctor to see whether there is any damage to the lining of the gullet or stomach, & whether there are any ulcers in the stomach or duodenum. The procedure is painless & done under no to light sedatives. The patient will not be able to drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day. For more information, please click here.

Rotavirus

Rotavirus is a virus that causes diarrhea (sometimes severe), mostly in babies and young children. It is often accompanied by vomiting and fever and can lead to dehydration. Rotavirus is not the only cause of diarrhea, but it is one of the most serious. The best way to protect your baby from the rotavirus disease is with a rotavirus vaccine.

The vaccine is an oral (swallowed) vaccine, not an injection. This vaccine will not prevent diarrhea or vomiting caused by other germs, though will from the rotavirus including the severe form. The vaccine is given in either 2 or 3 doses; your provider can tell you which brand you’ll be receiving & length of doses. Babies may become irritable, have temporary, mild diarrhea or vomiting after getting the vaccine.

If your baby has severe (life-threatening) allergic reaction to a dose of rotavirus vaccine, they should not get another dose; please notify your pediatrician immediately. Also, babies with severe combined immunodeficiency should not receive the vaccine.

Osteopenia

Osteopenia is a condition caused by losing density in your bones, which means your bones are thinning. This is not the same as Osteoporosis, which is when your bones have become porous. Osteopenia means that you haven’t had as much bone loss as someone with Osteoporosis, though it is still a serious diagnosis. If the bone loss continues, it will eventually become Osteoporosis. Osteopenia isn’t something that’s found worldwide, though predominately found among those with a “Westernized” diet – with such habits as smoking, caffeine intake, stress, alcohol abuse, little physical labor, excessive protein intake or taking over the counter remedies. There are other factors that also contribute towards Osteopenia such as genetics, chronic dehydration or medical conditions. Treatment plans are available to help slow down the bone loss. The first step is to obtain a DEXA scan – a bone density scan, which is offered at Apex; from this scan, a treatment plan can be issued by your provider. For more information, click here.
